Re: We Close Tonight

Well, John's part in "Helpless Dancer" is a lot more than a back-up vocal on
the chorus. He is the sole singer for that part. Aren't Pete's brief vocal
passages in "Bargain" and "Baba O'Riley" lead vocals? To me, Pete's singing
of those verses represents a change to a more contemplative perspective,
which contributes to the overall power of the song. He doesn't sing those
lines to give Roger a breather. It is at least a lead vocal "part".

Regarding "Helpless Dancer", it was probably a lot easier for the Who to
trade the vocal parts when performing it live, but it also reflects the
"multiple personality" aspect of the story. Even the studio version of
"Helpless Dancer" has the verses sung in differing tonalities, almost in a
call and response fashion.

John also had a pretty high range as a vocalist. Maybe he could pull off
those parts better than Roger in a live setting.
