There was a movie back in the mid/early eighties called "Birdy" which, I
believe is also a novel.  It's about a Vietnam vet who's not really deaf,
dumb and blind, but lost in his own world, like Tommy.  It's not a bad
flick, with Nicholas Cage as his army buddy trying to snap him out of it,
and Mathew Modine as Birdy.  I don't know if we're thinking about the same
thing, but thought I'd throw that out.  I don't know which came out first,
Tommy the album or Birdy the novel.  

Also, a little piece of info about the movie Birdy, Peter Gabriel does the
soundtrack for the film.  All instrumental material that's really good.
Probably only available on vinyl, but absolutely worth getting your grubby
hands on a copy.
