On FACE DANCES he said that it didn't work but he had no idea why. He said
his best guess was that he had had such fun writing and recording the
personal songs on EMPTY GLASS that he thought, "why not write a batch of
songs in the same style for The Who?" only to find it didn't fit their
style.

I've never heard him say one word about IT'S HARD after its release (he
certainly had a LOT to say about it before hand) except to say he thought
the album sleeve sucked. The closest I've ever heard him remark about it
afterwards was to say that he worked as hard on the songs on the last two
albums as he had on any of the previous Who albums.
