All that slaving over the songs is probably what was wrong with the
production. Let's try a little quiz here: Which is the biggest hit from
IT'S HARD? Which is the one you still hear most on the radio? Which is the
one Pete worked least hard on?
I really hate to pop anybody's bubble here, but I really don't think lyrics
is Pete's big thing. Does any of "Baba O'Riley" really make sense? How
about "I Can See For Miles?" "Behind Blue Eyes" maybe? Not a lick of
reason in any of them.
Pete does have fits of narrative now and then, and can make very good sense,
but these aren't the songs everybody really wants to hear. We all go for
the murky, incomplete ones that express a flash of feeling, or maybe a
partially glimpsed concept--the ones that have beautiful music to lift our
hearts up and make them fly.
Pete, or The Who, or the combination, make beautiful music together. They
did it last summer. Roger's right--it shouldn't be that hard.
