Bowie, Crow Salute the Who

David Bowie, Sheryl Crow, Pearl Jam lead Who tribute album

A few of the Who's biggest fans, namely Pearl Jam, David Bowie, Sheryl Crow
and Phish, are among the artists involved in the Who tribute album,
Substitute -- The Songs of the Who
. The album features eleven covers of songs
that span the group's twenty-five-year career and is the first tribute album
officially sanctioned by Who mastermind Pete Townshend. The album received
Townshend's blessing when Bob Pridden, the Who's live sound engineer,
approached him about the project. Pridden had been in the studio with the
Liverpool band Cast who recorded a cover of "The Seeker" as a B-side, and the
tribute album was born."I'd been approached to do this many times before,"
Townshend said. "For the first time I felt comfortable with the idea of
having Bobby at the helm. Since then I've left him to it and I'm amazed and
flattered at the number of great artists he's managed to involve."One of
those great artists, David Bowie, who recorded a cover of the 1968 tune
"Pictures of Lily" for the album, had these words of praise for the Who: "The
Who's work became a major template for so many of us. The considered and
intelligent use of so-called 'art-theory,' actively engaged with rock music,
was merely one of Pete's phenomenally important contributions to the new
'language' of rock. Nice trousers too!" The Who even donated a track to the
album, a live version of "Substitute," featuring Sterephonics singer Kelly
Jones. The track was recorded during a benefit concert at London's Royal
Albert Hall. Pearl Jam have also contributed a live track, their cover of
"The Kids Are Alright."The album is being released on EAR Records and is due
out June 12th. The full track listing for the disc is as follows: Cast, "The
Seeker"
