John Entwistle on Never Mind the Buzzcocks

As announced on this list last week, JAE appeared on the Never Mind the
Buzzcocks last night. This BBC programme mixes music and humour into a
usually entertaining half-hour quiz show.

John was introduced as "The Ox, which means that The Who were the only band
who knew it was going to rain at one of their open-air concerts - whenever
their bass player started laying down in a field."

John's other guests were both unknown and unentertaining, which meant this
particular episode was pretty dull. John was pretty unimpressed for most of
show - and sat with a bewildered look on his face. He was particularly
unimpressed with a feeble joke about not being any good at pinball.

John didn't get many his team's questions right. He failed to identify the
guitarist of Saxon - even when told that Saxon had recorded at his own
studio. He did get a bonus point for being a member of The Who, though.

In one round, JAE and a teammate (Phil Jupitus) had to sing the
introductions to particular songs (no words), and the other teammate had to
guess the song. It was quite surreal - seeing a member of the Who sing the
music to Abba's "Fernando". Before starting to do a Wings' song, John said
to Phil: "Are you going to play the guitar bit?", to which Phil replied:
"Yes I'm gonna do the guitar! Do you always ask that to Townshend?"

Towards the end of the show, the quizmaster said a line of a song, to which
the team had to sing the next line. When the question master said "Momma's
got a squeezebox that she wears on her chest", JAE just blanked. He had
know idea of the next line. Even when told the name of the song. Even when
told the name of the group.

But he did redeem himself at the end: to the question "Now he's up above my
head, hanging by a little thread" he did a deep throated "Boris The Spider".

In the end his team won nine points to eight. But not until an
unentertaining and embarrassing time was had by all.
