Yes, I'm talking about Quad, and I'll stand behind the statement. ;)
It's not that I think TED didn't do an outrageus job with the production and
performance--they really did. The show is completely spell-binding, and of
course once you're captured, you don't notice their age, or any mistakes or
anything else but how gorgeous it is. Still, they were fiftish year old men
acting out parts written for teens. The element of parody was planned, and
it arms them for any critics who want to point this out.
TED are smart guys, and humor is something that runs through TOMMY as well.
If anybody complains about the music or the story or the performace, then
all they have to say is "Well, it's all a joke anyhow." In a way it is, or
course, but then in another way, they're dead serious about it.
I rather thought the other characters were entertaining. I sure there were
several reasons for including them. For one, they gave Roger and Pete a
break--from all reports it's a killer to sing. It might bring in some new
fans--I'm not sure what kind of fan base GG and BI have at this point, but
Billy Idol, at least, is younger, and I think they're both associated with
the punk movement rather than classic rock. Also, it gave TED a chance to
work with the characters and staging. It's a pretty well-understood fact
that Pete was interested in developing ideas for a Broadway show.
