Who's better?

by DAVID PAUL

ONE member is almost bald, one is nearly deaf and you can't help wondering if
the other one would rather be looking after his fish farm.
But put them on stage and you get The Who.
Almost 35 years after they released their first hit single they are still one
of, if not THE best, live rock act around.
It's 19 years since their last Top 10 single, but the London Arena was a sellout
for their current Greatest Hits tour.
And from the moment they hit the first chord of their opener I Can't Explain to
the blistering version of My Generation in the encore, The Who justified their
decision to go on the road again...even at their age.
These are no fat cat rock stars trotting out their back catalogue to pocket even
fatter cheques.
Roger Daltrey was once sacked from the band for fighting with the other members.
And that sense of tension still seems to exist today.
It creates a desire for them to show how rock music can and should be played.
Pete Townsend told the crowd that rock 'n' roll hadn't died, there was still
great young talent around...and he even singled out Robbie Williams. Robbie can
only hope he sounds - and looks - as good as Daltrey in 30 years' time.
As for the others, John Entwistle received one of the biggest cheers of the
night for a bass solo! His feet don't move, but his fingers sure can.
And Townsend? You know he's a great guitarist, but until you see him do it live
you just don't realise how great he is.
Most of last night's audience were people in their 30s, 40s and 50s. That's a
shame.
If you're under 25 you might never have heard of them. But treat yourself - go
see The Who.
