Did a little research on my own question.
Dr. King was shot by James Earl Ray on April 3rd.  That would be the day
before the Fillmore 68 show.
Unless someone else has a theory, I'd say Pete was forgiving James Earl Ray.

Do you think Democrats will forgive Ralph that fast? ;-)  heh, heh

Just a quick shout out to my favorite Republican Dan, in that big 'ol
horse-ridin' state in the south that we shouldn't mess with.
I've always thought Vermont should adopt the same slogan (Don't mess with
Vermont).  Very similar independent attitudes.
