writing songs

Okay, I thought a little bit on what Pete should write songs about and I've
got an answer:

All of Pete's songs that I like the best are written about something he
FEELS. The ones where somebody has said, "Here, Pete, write something about
this," don't speak to me nearly as much. Some of those are really fun and
creative, of course, but the best ones are about something he saw and felt
something strongly about.

All of TOMMY and QUAD fall into this category, as do "Who Are You" and
"Behind Blue Eyes" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," and etc., etc., etc., right
on down the line. Some of the ones I like best are just mental doodles, not
even well developed. Do you think he's surprised that "Eminence Front" is
such a favorite? I love the original "Can't Do It Alone," too, while the
version on FACE DANCES doesn't hold my interest. The best ones are just
basic, raw feeling put into words.
