MP3s

Here's another article from June 10 that I haven't gotten a chance to
post, re settlement of MP3.com's recent legal hassles:

SAN FRANSISCO - The popular Web site MP3.com, which allows consumers to
create virtual music libraries online, looks to have won more than just
continued survival by settling copyright infringements claims Friday
with recording industry giants Warner Music and BMG.

The settlement's exact terms were not disclosed, but mp3.com will pay
more than $20 million to each company, the AP reported. The deal also
includes a new licensing agreement that will allow mp3.com to
eventually resume storing music from both companies on the service.

The settlement brings to an end Warner and BMG's claim that San
Diego-based mp3.com violated copyright law with it's "Instant Listening
Service" and "Beam-it" technologies.

Those services allow users to listen, over the Internet, to music
stored on mp3.com computer servers via "streaming-media"
technology--but only after proving ownership of that music.

Users must have either purchased that music directly from mp3/com and
be waiting for it to be physically delivered, or they must briefly
insert compact disk versions of the recordings into their home PCs.

Love that last. Is it a crock or what? If you insert the compact disk
version, why play it from MP3.com? They got screwed. All they needed
to do was start up their own radio station.
