More Matt on Official Who Bootlegs

Matt Kent posted this follow up on petetownshend.com concerning The Who
releasing official bootlegs and the problems The Who might run into:

"The title [Who Put The Boots Out] was mine and seems to be the one that's
going to be used for the series.
With regards to editing etc, then I'm with you - it should be unedited. My
background
is the same as yours, I'm a fan and I would prefer a warts and all release
rather than
one that's been tarted up. If asked that will be my reply. With regards to
what will be
released that's more tricky. A lot will probably be what some of you already
have and
so you will probably be disappointed. For others, however, it will give you
a chance to
get material that otherwise you would have to search high and low for and
pay
extortionate prices for. The first batch will no doubt be taken from this
type of
material.

With regards to the legal aspects, as far as I'm aware the band doesn't own
it's entire
catalogue and certain labels have first refusal on material released from
certain eras.
Pete has only just got back the rights to some of his solo work, he still
doesn't own it
all and so there are legal aspects to this. I'm not a music lawyer and
wouldn't hazard
to guess what the possible problems are but it isn't as straight forward as
we may
think. If record companies didn't own the rights to live recordings then the
BPI would
have a lot less work on their plates, surely?"
