The end of Melody Maker



Melody Maker, the U.K. music magazine in publication since 1926, will put
out its last issue next Monday then will close and be merged into New
Musical Express, its chief rival for decades.

Some Who highlights from Melody Maker:
Sept. 7, 1963 - MM runs an ad for Marshall Amps listing The Detours (later
The Who) as clients.
Mar. 13, 1964 - MM mentions The Who for the first time nationally in an
article on London's R&B scene.
Nov. 7, 1964 - MM carries an ad for The Who featuring, for the first time,
Richard Barnes' famous lettering with the arrow coming up out of the "O."
It also carries the first notice for The Who Fan Club.
Jan. 9, 1965 - MM prints The Who's first show review.
Aug. 28, 1965 - MM runs "The Price Of Pop Art" detailing The Who's insane
expenditures.
Oct. 8, 1966 - MM declares "I'm A Boy" England's #1 single in a full page
cover.
May 4, 1968 - MM reports first that Pete is writing a rock opera about a
deaf, dumb and blind boy.
Aug 22, 1970 - MM prints the first of several "Pete Townshend Pages"
authored for the magazine by Pete.
Aug. 19, 1972 - MM has Pete's first description of the project that will
become "Quadrophenia."
Oct. 14, 1978 - MM carries Pete's first interview after Keith's death.
Oct. 6, 1980 - John McVicar writes MM to defend Roger's movie about his
life.
Oct. 11, 1980 - MM carries a joint interview with Pete and Paul Weller at
their first meeting.
