This is precisely the point! Lars and Metallica are loaded. They went past
the point of financial worry a long time ago. How about the bands who aren't
so well off? Will the future be that an artist puts his blood, sweat and
tears into a recording (to say nothing of the enormous investment in time and
recording costs), have 1 person pay their $15.98, and 10 million download it
for free? What they are fighting for is CONTROL of their music to release
and distribute as they see fit. As you said, Pete releases demos on his site
and on the Scoop albums. It was his decision, and he made it. This is
completely opposite to what is going on with Napster. Metallica had no part
in the decision to put their toons on Napster, to say nothing of the
stealing of a work in progress. Pure hijacking. And don't believe for a
second that Napster isn't out to make a buck, like every other business. They
are trying to establish a large user base, which they can then deliver to
advertisers. All off the hard work of the un-paid artists. Why is everyone's
well placed anger towards evil record companies turning into wildly
mis-placed justification for stealing from artists?
