press conference comments

I just got through watching the press conference. I was on a T1 and
the video was still jerky and occasionally the audio stalled. I hope
that this was because so many of us tried to watch it at once!

I reloaded the page and it said that this would be available again as
a webcast, so for those of you who missed it the first time, fear not!

I didn't record the audio, but jotted a few notes down as I listened:

Paul Schaeffer (from David Letterman) came out first and gave a story
of when he first heard The Who (in Canada). Then they played My
Generation (from either HOB or SBE) over a sequence of still images
from the band's career. Then Paul introduced the band and they came
out for some photo opportunities before getting into the press
conference proper.

Q: What's it like to go on tour w/out new material? Is this a
nostalgia act?

Roger: We want to develop new material on the road and record it if it
sounds good.

Q: What's the motivation behind the 5 piece arrangement?

Roger: We've been through many formats since Keith died, but this one
gives us more energy.

John: and allows us to improvise more rather than having to tell 10
people what we're going to do next.

Q: What about your ears, Pete?

Pete: I'm using the same rig as I did in the Live at Leeds period,
only I've reduced it from 4 cabinets to 1 cabinet and changed the
guitar. So now I've got the cabinet down on the floor and not up next
to my ears. Plus I spent a lot of time in the studio playing a good
song over and over and never gave my ears a rest. "My ears are in
good shape."

[random bits]

Pete: I'm a fan of the black crows.

They will try to keep ticket prices "fair and reasonable", but no
dollar amount given as it varies from city to city and makret to
market.

Roger feels he has three songs that might be right for the Who.

Pete says that playing the hits feels and sounds better to him now.

There were lots more questions, but I didn't take scrupulous notes on
everything. It lasted about 30 minutes worth of Q&A.

Roger talked about the Keith film he's been working on for 10 years.
So far he's examined 4 scripts which he's rejected. He has also
stopped some other films from being made that wouldn't have portrayed
Keith as a person. Roger: "The film is about what a drummer does on
his days off." He hopes that he will get a good script soon and move
forward on the production. Pete has been very supportive of Roger in
this effort and is letting him use the Who's music for the film.

I scribbled down some of the tour dates while they scrolled by (I'm
sure the complete list will be available soon anyway):

    27th Detroit
    3rd Boston
    5th DC
    7th Philadelphia
    9th Las Vegas
    14th Phoenix
    16th Los Angeles
    19th Seattle
    21st San Francisco
    27th Dallas
    24th Miami
    Atlanta
    Cleveland
    Toronto

Yes, I know you want to know the months and details, but that was all
I had time to write down! As you can see, near the end I just
scribbled down cities as I was missing them ;-). Fear not, more
detailed (and accurate) reports will be coming in, but I want to
'flash' this to you other fans ASAP.
