Pete and MP3

In regards to concern over the MP3 release of Pete's double live album:

i think it's a brilliant move, considering his position. Consider this:
how many of us true blue fans will NOT buy the album just because we can
download a almost-as-good version for free? Not that many, i would guess. i
myself have a cd-burner and could, if i wanted, pirate a copy off of the
MP3. However, i plan on buying it the day it comes out because i want the
real deal (pictures, top quality sound, maybe liner notes). Maybe a few of
us will hear the album and not be impressed or not want to spend the money,
but the majority will buy it regardless.
The casual Pete fan probably isn't aware of the free download, but those
that are, and are curious, may check it out. If they really like it, they
will probably buy it, because the average internet geek can play MP3 files
but doesn't own his own cd-burners. Some do, but most don't. In any case,
the word-of-mouth generated from doing this will outweigh the lost sales
(that's my bet, and Pete's).
Plus, the word-of-mouth and the reporting on this experimental marketing
concept will no doubt make more people aware of the release... and more
people curious to hear it.
Bottom line is i think it will overall help sales if it is a limited
(one week) deal. Here's hoping it works.
i can't wait... personally, i'm downloading it just to hear it a day
before i go buy it....
