Re: Who in Ads

Hello Who-ligans,

I too, have seen the offensive Gateway commercial. I do have to
admit, that while I loathe commercialism, especially from the Who, I
do enjoy the exposure. I think that many will wonder about this
wonderful song selling computers. Oh well, the classic dilemma.

A little Who/Adverts story. In 1989, the Who were in the Chicago
area for a couple of shows. Roger Daltrey was on the radio as a guest
of the J. Brandmeir show. I called and talked to the "little singer"
and asked him how he felt about Who songs in TV commercials. He said
that he wasn't aware. (At the time, 7Up had a commercial with a
basketball player, playing Bball in the rain and stopping to enjoy a
cool, crisp 7Up. The background music was "Love, Reign O'er Me" and
it wasn't The Who. It was an awful cover. Simultaneously, Jiffy Lube
used a cover of "I Can See for Miles" informing customers that if they
came to Jiffy, their cars would drive for "miles and miles and
miles.") When I told him this, Johnny B (the host) exclaimed that
Roger looked like he wanted to "smash the console"; he looked that
pissed off. Anyway, Roger said that since Pete owns the songs, he
does what he wants to. But he said, "don't try and copy The Who.
Whenever I hear somebody copying my voice it makes me cringe."

There's my little story. Until next time,
