The story behind Astley's credit on "The Saint" is an
interesting one. The original "Saint" signature theme used
in the early movies ('40s/'50s) was penned by "The Saint"s
authour, Leslie Charteris. When the Moore series was being
made, Charteris asked Astley to update the signature tune.
The melody that Astley penned was based on a generations-old
whistle call which his family had used at their country home.
Isn't that a fascinating tidbit? :)
Astley also wrote the theme tune for Gerry Anderson's
"Stingray" series, whose producer, Barry Grey, owned the
home studio where The Detours recorded "It Was You".
