With remarkable timing, here's Pete commenting on the question that has
been bouncing around on this mailing list.  It's from this Friday's
edition of The Times (London):

"Townshend may now be a spent force as a rock'n'roll
  iconoclast. But he still believes passionately in pop as a
  form of high art, and divides his friends and associates
  from literary and showbusiness circles into those who 'get
  it' and those who don't. And whatever his commercial
  standing he is clearly determined, at some point, to speak
  through his music to his audience again. Whether they are
  still listening remains to be seen."
