re: the inconclusiveness of endings in Townshend stories (at least prior
to 1989): a feel that both Tommy and Quadrophenia end on an internal
instead of external action; that is, the point of the ending is not what
physically happens to the characters but their spiritual realization.

In essence all Townshend characters are seekers, usually beginning by
seeking
outside themselves for answers, then ultimately, and usually painfully,
realizing the answer is "in my head here at the start."
