Re: The Who Mailing List Digest V5 #136

RE: Pete and Keith 's alcoholism & David Hartman Interview:

I love the who, have all their CDs and even duplicates (CDs and vinyl).

But i want to make one thing clear: I do want to gloss over Keith's and
Pete's alcoholism. I love Pete especially; I was teenager when Quad came
out in the 70's; I felt Pete understood the things I was going through-
even though I did not understand anything about mods. Quad still gave
expression to how a lot of young people feel about parents, drugs, and sex.

I have seen either Roger, John or the Who the last four years in a row here
in Minneapolis, and this July I am going to see
Roger and the Brit Rock show with my brother, his wife, and my 12 year old
son. I want to share the wonderful music of the Who with my son, but I also
want him to understand how destructive booze was in Keith's and Pete's
life.

As a parent, I want to share with my son this great music, which I think is
timeless. But I also want to teach him that that some of the wild rock and
roll life style that my heroes the Who lived was very destructive to them
and those around them.

Pete and Keith were alcoholics. As much as admire them, and as much as they
have meant to me in my life,
I want my son to understand that it was sad and tragic that they had this
terrible disease, and that certain aspects of their life style should not
be emulated.

hate to break this to you...but the fact is that when the interview was
taking
place, both keith and pete were spending a whole lot of time being drunk
and
acting like asses...its called being alcoholic. while i am not a fan of
david
hartmann, and generally despise rock people being interviewed by people who
are not rock fans, the sad realization is that keith and pete came off like
fools, because drinking and drugging to excess is a foolish thing to do,
and
you do come across as a fool.

I thought that the Keith Moon story was excellent and very informative, yet
it
focused to much on the tragedy of his actions rather than how cool they
were.
After seeing it, I realized that although I have alll of the official WHo
recordings, and a number of Bootlegs, I have no actual Keith Moon drum
solos!!!!!!!!! Does anybody have a bootleg with a Keith Moon drum solo on
it? I have other bootlegs to trade if anyones interested. Thank You!!!!!

Yes there are as many sides to a story as witnesses but we were talking
about
why Pete was inconclusive in his writing and I was pointing to the way that
*he* seems to view things differently at different times...and no I'm not
in
his head...just going by his lyrics and interviews...and my perceptions.
The
many facets of Pete's writings is not a MUST it is a result of the man's
genius!

Sounds like indecisiveness to me :) Well put!! He does make it sound like
the
most important info.... 'cause it is ;)

Ok... but Pete saw fit to incorporate it into a song that is meaningful to
me
and an example of his use of contradiction.

Many people(and I won't be sexist and say men but ...) put on a façade of
strength when in fact they are the most insecure and weak. Being aware and
honest about those weaknesses is truly the sign of a REAL person. So, I'm
not
necessarily attracted to weakness as much as I am to honesty and sincerity
of
feelings. Being in touch with emotions and not being afraid to share them
is
the turn on!

Absolutely true! Pete wants no responsibility, it seems. But on the other

Can someone please tape the VH-1 story of Keith for me? Unfortunately
VH-1 only airs from 4am to 4pm in my market area. I would prefer a S-VHS
copy, however a stereo composite (regular VHS) is my second choice and
also preferred on new tape. I really don't mean to be picky, it's just
that Keith has meant so much to me over the years I'd just like to get this
one right. Hell, I'll settle for anything I can get!

I liked to think that I will be generous with the trade and make it worth
the while, within reason of course.

Please e-mail me privately.

And thanx very much in advance,
Beau ('I Need You') McCrury

I've been a major Who fan for enough years to know that both Pete and
Keith would'nt give a DAMN (drunk or sober) if Hartman (or anybody else
for that matter) thought that they were being foolish/asses or whatever!
I saw the special last night, and I did'nt think that interview was
nearly as bad as some people hear kind of made it out to be.
Sure, Keith at one point for a second or two seemed to be at a loss of
words, so he just said whatever, but both he and Keith had lived a kind
of success for the previous 15 years that Hartman could only DREAM
about, so I guarantee that they did'nt give a damn if Hartman did'nt
like them, or was trying to by holyer than thou.
