Re: Pete the sexist?

Carolyn:

That was exactly my thought. But I would say to you and any other woman
offended by this line and any others on this particular album: this
isn't Townshend but Jimmy saying this. So as the character might have
been a sexist, which isn't surprising since it was the early `60s and it
was still OK then...encouraged, in fact...and, too, he was young and
recently burned by a woman he was in love with. In this sort of
circumstance, I would say it's no worse than a woman muttering "Men!"
As for the "rape" part, the character was drunk...so again, I don't
think Pete was looking for a way to express his OWN views, but instead
to define Jimmy. Like stage acting, it means sometimes one must
"overact." After all, Pete only had 90 minutes to get it all across. As
I've often said, it should have been a triple album...
How could Pete be sexist anyway? As we were recently reminded on the
Howard Stern show, he can feel like a woman.

I must say I've never understood this feeling by some women. If the
women IN the pictures weren't willing participants, maybe. But they
were. Therefore the only possible exploitation was with the men (or
women) who bought the pictures. Turning the coin, not too many men would
have a problem being admired by women in a similar fashion.

Ha! How about the Stones? Lennon was an amateur!
