I have to agree with you that all of the aforementioned artists are quite
passionate in their work. I find Nick Cave, especially, to be a grossly
underrated talent. It's too bad that more people aren't aware of him. I
have deep respect for artists that cast aside other peoples' expectations
and go down their own chosen paths. This is why I've always been a
Who/Townshend fan, and this is also why I have the same respect for 
Elvis Costello, John Lennon, Roger Waters, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Davies,
Peter Gabriel, Billy Joel, Bob Geldof, Freddie Mercury and countless
others, who are far too many to mention.
