Radio Play

Ben,
I just finished taking a commercial music class, and I hate to say it, but
your friend is right. Bands are payed by the radio station when their songs
are played. Although they don't get paid every time, most of the time they
do. The DJ either has to fill out a cue sheet, or a computer prints out a
station log, and then they send those to one of the three major licensing
companies here in the U.S.: BMI, ASCAP, or SESAC. It just depends on which
company the artist is affiliated. These sheets also help to give magazines
like Billboard their info. Also, if the radio station plays a song that is
over 4 minutes in length, the radio station has to pay twice the amount that
it usually would to play the song. Thus the reason for radio edits coming
in at 3:59. Hope that helps!
