Frank Zappa had a term for this fancy guitar tricks (2 handed tapping 
and all that).  On his liner notes for songs featuring Steve Vai, who 
played with Zappa in 1980-82, the credits always run like this:

Guitar: FZ
Stunt Guitar: Steve Vai

I agree, I think PT plays completely from the heart.  He seems able 
to translate what's going on in his head directly to his fingers.  
Lucky bastard.
