I don't know exactly, but I think that particular model of Les Paul
was called a Gibson Les Paul Custom DeLuxe Recording Model. Presumably
they are few and far between, but as far as I know they were readily
available to any punter off the street, and not "customised" per se.
The first time I saw pete playing one was on Won't Get Fooled Again
on TKAA, and he was playing the one marked "1". The number had no
serifs and just looked like a white stripe to me. It wasn't until I
saw him playing Baba O'Reilly with number "6" (?) that I realised
that he had a series of numbred Les Pauls. Presumably the numbers
are white, and large, so that on stage, between numbers, he can pick
out which ones he needs to use for the next song. I assume that they
were all set up in different ways (e.g. with or wihout pre-amps,
de-tuned etc.) for different songs. Does anyone know?? Either way I
would commit murders to get my grubby hands on one of them ; )
