I don't know exactly, but I think that particular model of Les Paul 
was called a Gibson Les Paul Custom DeLuxe Recording Model.  Presumably 
they are few and far between, but as far as I know they were readily 
available to any punter off the street, and not "customised" per se.  
The first time I saw pete playing one was on Won't Get Fooled Again 
on TKAA, and he was playing the one marked "1".  The number had no 
serifs and just looked like a white stripe to me.  It wasn't until I 
saw him playing Baba O'Reilly with number "6" (?) that I realised 
that he had a series of numbred Les Pauls.  Presumably the numbers 
are white, and large, so that on stage, between numbers, he can pick 
out which ones he needs to use for the next song.  I assume that they 
were all set up in different ways (e.g. with or wihout pre-amps, 
de-tuned etc.) for different songs.  Does anyone know??  Either way I 
would commit murders to get my grubby hands on one of them ; )
