Bass

Well, I play guitar for a few time (two years and something),
I've got an electric and an acoustic. I was really thinking
about starting to play the bass too. Well, as I don't know
much about bass yet, could you fellow listers who play bass
give me some hints? What do I need to get that sound John
have on Live At Leeds (e.g. My Generation solo, amazing journey/Sparks, 
and Shakin'All Over)? Does he uses active
pickups or the like there? If not, what make that sound
different and so trebly?
