Re: Leo the excellent/Punk meets Godfather/Stay Tuned

JB 2 The Who,
Two more awesome anecdotes!

>"You know.,..none of us would ever BE HERE" Pete gestured broadly to include
>the fans.."None of us would be here, or want to be here, if we hadn't be
>utterly FUCKED-UP at some time or another!"

Well, I qualified my crazy Who fan theory a bit last time, BUT then
again... who am I to argue with Pete. God this is a great list!!
Anyway, thanks to JB and Rob for your thoughts on my last rant.

Yes, I've heard the fabled tale where properly pissed Pete met up with
two of the Sex Pistols in a bar (Paul Jones and Steve Cook, wasn't it??)
and how they pleaded with him not to end The Who. Wasn't it the night
Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp legally ended their relationship with the
'Oo. Pete was bumming. Anyway, like you said, he lost Lambert and
Stamp, but gave us "Who Are You". Sad trade, but a song I couldn't live
without.

I've always wondered what John Lydon himself thought of The Who. I'm
glad I now know for certain. I do give punk rock and especially the Sex
Pistols a lot of credit for launching the attack that ended the reign of
Disco and made Rock "delinquent" again. It should never be too
respectable. I do think it's a great tribute to Pete and the boys that
of all the early British bands Lydon held respect only for the Who, the
original punks.

Deer Hart,
See you later. Don't stay away too long. I'm going to be moving to LA
in August (don't know where or how exactly) so I'll have to wrench
myself off the list at the end of July too. God knows when I'll be
back. I get this at work and my home computer is ancient.

Live Aid: Andrew writes:
>It wasn't a satellite problem. The power went out at Wembley disabling
>everything including the broadcast.

Well anyway, that's what poor Bill Graham said to the angry mob in
Philadelphia that day, "It's the satellite", but I'm sure he'd say
anything to keep from being pelted with whatever ninety thousand people
could lay to hand. Didn't someone who was at the Wembley show write in
and say that The Who's performance never missed a beat and the people in
Wembley had no idea that the rest of the satellite fed world were being
tortured with Who-silence. Was it John that said that? How did the
whole thing play out anyway?

P.S. JB: Thanks for the compliment, it goes right to my pointy head.
Actually, the level of off-the-cuff writing on this list in general is
pretty damn good and I think it says a lot for the creativity and
intelligence of the average Who soldier (especially Mark, Brian, and
Deer Hart; I don't mention Ms. Ledbetter because her seemingly
effortless writing talent is a humbling experience for me).

Who fix: Lately every few days I need to hear one of the following:
Join Together, My Generation, 5:15 (or pretty much any cut from Quad),
and Who Are You (as often as possible). What I'm hankering for actually
is two Pete solo songs that I haven't heard in years since my albums are
in Connecticut (my turntable died long ago) and I haven't bought the CDs
yet: "My Baby Gives It Away" and "Street In The City", I love those!
