Re: Tommy Theatrical Production(s)

Dave,

In answer to your questions:

Was Tommy performed in London? - Yes it was although as I said in my
previous mail, anyone who saw the U.S. production felt it didn't have
the technical 'thrill' of that version.

Did you like it? - Yes, I loved it, took me a little while to get used
to the idea but yes.

Was it panned by the critics? - no it was praised. Some of the cirtics
here are pretty hard bitten. Top national newspaper theatre crits were
generally very supportive.

What was Pete's reaction? - I woulnd't like to speculate what PT's
reaction to anything is (!). All heard that he worked very very hard on
it - as I believe he does with everything - he worked on the touring
production as well but that didn't seem to stay on for long. I think he
was happy with the award it won - sadly it came just after the show
closed.

I saw the play in New York and I'm curious how it fared in Pete's
homeland. I too support and admire all his work. - PT has said himself
that The Who and the individual careers that ran alongside have always
been better acknowledged in the U.S. - He said something along the lines
of it being America that paid for his car, his kids education, his home.
Sometimes the London stage is very fickle, reviews are good but the show
doesn't last. Generally in the UK we tend to be fairly cynical and it's
very annoying. People who are down are praised and given a hand and
applauded on their way up, when they get there everyone picks holes.
It's sad. In theU.S. you tend to enjoy people's success more openly so
(to sum up, sorry I'm rambling again) I would say that Tommy, like a
lot of things that he does, didn't receive the audience it deserved in
this country. That doesn't change the fact that the show was of a very
high standard - consistently so which is more than you can say for a lot
of shows.

Happy Christmas
