I don't have any inside info but...
I recently bought the video of this concert, but I've only watched it once
and can't remember many details.  He did play the bodhran at the end of the
show during one of the last songs.  They only showed him briefly a couple of
times and it seemed to me he didn't *really* know what to do with it. ;o)
(Can't swing it like a microphone, can you?!) My guess is they gave the
drum to him to keep him *busy* during the big finale. He also sang a couple
of songs - including Behind Blue Eyes.  And that's about all I remember
offhand.
