Synthezisers & Rock

Now I first payed attention to the syntheziser bit on "Maxwell's Siver
Hammer". Yeah, they did before the Who, as a solo instrument, and it
worked pretty well. Most of the time synths are used as a solo
instrument, the result is ridiculous. Listen to "Tom Sawyer" (The song
was made famous in Brazil due to the series "McGyver, which had it as
the opening song), from the album "Moving Pictures" (In my opinion the
last Rush album worth listening). It is an amazing song, with great
drumming from Neil Peart (which is in my opinion the best metronome
drummer). But that synth solo just spoils the song, it's awful... But
the silver beatles used it well 10+ years before. Ok, nothing can be
compared to Baba O'Riley or Won't Get Fooled Again, but Maxwell had it
and it worked well, that's my opinion. Any comment?
