I don't believe this shit for one moment.Yes,I can believe that Pete might
have told Page to "piss off" and called him a "wanker",but I do NOT believe
that Page told an engineer that "One day I hope to be JUST like Peter
Townshend. He's brilliant." It makes it sound like Page was a 12 year old
kid looking up to some hugely respected rock star, when in actual fact it was
Page who was the respected session musician, while Pete was the (not
especially great) guitarist in an up and coming pop band, cutting their first
single as The Who.
Don't get me wrong,I think Pete IS brilliant, although it some years for him
to develope his talent so that this "brilliance" shone through. The dialogue
that you credit to Page sounds like a line from a bad 'made for tv'
movie, and I don't believe that he ever said it,ESPECIALLY at this early
stage of The Who's recording career and Pete's writing career.I mean, let's
face it..."ICE" is a great pop tune,but it's hardly "brilliant".Especially
when you take into consideration the fact that Pete wrote it accidently
while trying to play a Kinks song that he'd heard.
