"I've Been Away"

I was thinking about this song this morning, and came up with an idea.
Throughout the song, the narrator insists that he is innocent, that
it was his brother Bill who "emptied out the till". But, since Bill was put
on the jury and was able to bribe the other jurors (since he "owns the local
brewery") to put the narrator in jail, doesn't that imply that he doesn't
really need the money? Could the narrator have done it? (I suppose if he's
out for blood when he's released from prison, though, he must have been not
guilty....)
