Re: Psychoderelict

The album Psychoderelict was conceived as a play with music. The songs
themselves serve alternatively as illumination to the characters, plot, and
setting of the play. The speaking voices you hear over the music is simply
the dialogue between the different characters of the play. Some of the
voices are also from characters of a rock opera project conceived by the
hero, Ray Hyde, the aging rock star and Pete Townshend's alter ego.
The plot is a bit convoluted and an e-mail explaining it on this digest
would be too long. If you give the album a careful listen or two you should
be able to figure it out on your own.
If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me directly.
                                              As to what Psychoderelict is
about, I believe it deals with the
theme of the spirituality/creativity of the artist at conflict with the
rather non-spiritual reality of the music business. I also think it is
about the conflict between the values and expectations of the sixties
generation (symbolized by Ray Hyde) with the cynicism of the nineties.
I am very interested in the themes of this album (which I do not believe
are restricted the two mentioned above) and other people's thoughts and
insights regarding it. Again, please e-mail me directly if anyone would like
to discuss it further.
If you really cannot enjoy the album with the characters' voices,
there is a "music only" edition which I would encourage you to buy. Once you
hear the songs on their own, you will realize that this is some of the best
solo work that Pete has done in years.
