'Gratis Amatis'

C'MON EVERYBODY (with apologies to the memory of Eddie Cochran...), you're
letting me down... 'Gratis Amatis' was a song played in 1966 by PT to Kit
Lambert, being a "10 minute aria consisting of high pitched Goon Show voices
singing 'Gratis Amatis' over and over for what seemed like an hour..." ( per
Richard Barnes, in "Deaf Dumb and Blind Boy" (the liner notes to the remixed
Tommy, 1996)). It is this seminal music (whether or not a PT composition is
unclear) which inspired the rock opera concept, leading directly to the
incomparable Tommy, it seems...Gary M.
