Who recording history

I confess that before I joined the list I hadn't thought much about which
record companies released the Who's albums in Europe and North America, but
I now realise there were different companies in different parts of the world
doing so, producing pressings and later CD's of varying qualities. For
instance there seems to be general accord that Polydor produced superior
recordings, at least in Germany. All I really know is that Decca released
Who records in North America originally and at some point Decca became MCA.
Also, that the Who were under contract to Warner's for a while in the early
80's. Could someone outline the history of what companies released the Who's
records in the principal markets from 1965 to date, with comments, if judged
appropriate, on the quality generally associated with the pressings/CD's of
the respective companies? WF, I have a feeling you are elected....Gary M.
