It boosts very low power signals like traditional guitar pickups, phono
cartridges, and tape heads to `line level' so the power amps can boost it to
speaker level. One things I've never understood is how `low-impedance'
signals (microphones or guitars going through `direct boxes') can reach the
mixing board through those long snakes.
