Who's audience

This might be a good place to point out how "out of step" The Who were with
the 60s mentality (that is, peace and love) the other major bands were
writing about during this period. So Pete and the boys were not exactly what
one might call "hippies." Personally, I think that this was a postive thing
(and since that period was short-lived, gave The Who a firmer base than
those bands and more influence on the coming music), but until `68 they
stood pretty much alone with the agressiveness of this stance.
Another major band not in sync during this time was The Kinks. Is it any
wonder their music is so enduring?
