At least, not until the 1982 tour when they sat side-by-
side in front of Kenney's drumkit & sang the chorus.

I's venture to suggest that instead of "spontaneous,"
Pete's reaction at that time was more typical of a contrarian
streak. He didn't feel like being "buddies" and therefore
 wasn't.

I seem to recall Roger describing the relationship with Pete
as almost a "big/little brother" situation, with Pete being a
dominant force until his problems in the late '70's. Methinx
that explains a lot about the turbulence over the years.

I would agree, but perhaps not in your original sense. I
think Roger was "acting" as though The Who could carry on
without missing a beat over Keith's death, and wanted Pete to
make everything all right. Pete obviously didn't share those
feelings or willingness to play the role.

May-be, but that conclusion by itself might underestimate
Pete's genuine angst at the time over drugs, death and his own
mortality. Where do you draw the line between cause & effect?
 ...

*Are* in the ways that count with me. And yeah, "gotta
love 'em" -- at least I'm spending entirely too much time in
 pointless speculation to call it idle curiosity ...  :-}
