An evening with The Who in Amsterdam

Last night (wednesday june 5) there was a special night in Paradiso Amsterdam.
The evening was called: Who's better, Who's best. Two bands played Who
material.

The first one was a 13 piece band consisting of 2 guitar, bass, drum, piano,
organ 2 horns, 2 male and 3 female singers. In about 1 hour they performed
Tommy from start to finish. It was all very well played, missing some text
lines in a couple of songs. But considdering it was a one time performence
it was very good: The crowd went crazy (crowd .... a couple of hunderd).
I enjoyed it very much.

After the break a four piece band hit the stage (bass, drum, guitar, vocal).
To me this was the best part. This temporarely band played songs from the
first three albums only (TWSMG,AQOWHA,SO). They started off with I can't
explain and ended with My Generation. I do not have the complete set list,
but I think Paul (from Den Haag) has got one. The guitar player was wearing
a Junion Jack jacket and more over had more or less a Pete shaped nose! This
band was great! I have never seen The Who live, but now I can imagine how
it would have been. They acted like I think The Who was: agressive, angry,
wild and very loud. Not always perfect, but very enjoyable. Songs from SO
were even done with the apropiate add. (coke after coke followed by Whiskey
Man).
The guitar player (sory I do not have the names here) hurt his hand while
playing that "wild style" of playing. He hold his hand up and asked for a
bandage. Somebody in the audiance shouted that Pete did it without bandage
and would use whiskey instead.
The last song was My Generation and as I expected it ended how it should
end: smashing guitar and drum and no encore (no equipment availble any more).

As you can see The Who is still alive here in Amsterdam. To me the evening
could have been titled: Who else. Meaning, as a band who else to play, and
who will do these kind of concerts as well.

Happy WHO-ing.
