catching up...

Anyways, point is, good or bad, the Who broke some new
ground creatively, whether I personally like it or not, since then, as
has
Townshend. I don't see it with Clapton. His popularity utterly baffles
me.
I know, I know, it's his fame, fortune, etc. but what the hell
difference
does that make?

I like to think of it as finally getting his due for all the phenomenal
stuff that went by everyone the first time. I mean, his first Grammy was
for Best Male Vocal on "Bad Love." Off the top of my head, I can think
of about 6000 things that EC did through 461 Ocean Blvd that should have
gotten a Grammy. they just never gave him one because a) he was a heroin
addict 2) the Grammys are not interested in Edge Value, just Visibility
(see: Cheryl Crow) 3) he managed to survive more or less intact.

oh, yeah,... the Who falls into the same category

Yes, I mean suspended (or sustained) chords - a staple of the modern rock
sound. Think of Jack and Diane, Summer of '69, Jailbreak, Power Windows,
all
of Boston, Cheap Trick, Styx, Green Day, Smithereens, Def Leppard, AC/DC,
some Van Halen, and there are hundreds of other examples. I maintain
this is Townshend's signature power chord sound developed in the late
60's,
showcased live at Leeds and refined on Who's Next....Gary M.

Or, you could just mention the opening of Pinball Wizard...

You don't have to know anything about medicine to know
that Pete probably would have been close to bleeding to death to produce
that much blood, but I like to muse that this really happened, because
it's
such a good story. However, this wasn't as good as another one he told
me
about The Who.

Having some experience in this matter, I can say that a surprisingly
small cut near the nail bed of your finger will produce a shocking amount
of blood, especially if you continue to windmill...

Normally, I would join in the Zep/Who debate, being a diehard fan of
both, but I'm honestly too damn tired this time. I'll wait for the next
one...
