'Mr. Bean' Bags Feature Deal
By Chris Petrikin
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - "Mr. Bean", the popular TV character
played by rubber-faced British comic Rowan Atkinson, is finally
headed to the big screen after several false starts.
The normally silent character, introduced on British
commercial broadcaster ITV and shown in episodes worldwide, is a
fastidious, middle-class wonk who walks into trouble.
The film will be called "Dr. Bean" and is scheduled to
begin shooting Sept. 30 in the U.S. with Mel Smith ("Romeo,
Romeo", "Radioland Murders") directing. Richard Curtis ("Four
Weddings and a Funeral") will co-write the script.
For nearly six years, "Mr. Bean" has been teased with
big-screen hopes, including a deal at 20th Century Fox. While a
feature never materialized, Fox took the unique step of
co-producing, along with HBO, two five-minute shorts, designed to
pre-sell Atkinson's character to American audiences.
To date, "Mr. Bean's" exposure in the U.S. has been limited
to those shorts and airings of the series on HBO and on PBS.
