Since I live way out in Washington, (the state, that is) going to see a Quad
MSG show on such short notice was out of the question,(not to mention I'm
still a teenager and lack 'o funds). When I read about Westwood One carrying
the 18th show, I was excited to say the least. I mean, Quadrophenia was the
anthem of my teenage years- when my girlfriend dumped me when I was 16, I felt
like I WAS Jimmy, sittin' on that roc , comtemplating a jump!-
Anyway, I called my local classic rock station, KZOK 102.5 in
Seattle, to ask if they were going to carry the event. Here's how the
conversation went, nearly word-for-word:
Me:" Are you guys gonna carry the WW1 broadcast of Quadrophenia on the 18th?"
They:"I know HBO is..."
Me:"Yeah, I know, but they're only going to show highlights of the Hyde Park
show, WW1 is broadcasting all of the 18th show live. Do you know any stations
carrying it?"
(At this point, I hear another person come on the line, who I recognize as
Steve Slaton, station manager, I think
Him: "I can answer that one. I'm
a big Who fan. We passed on that one and I'll tell ya why...(long
pause)....Roger can't sing anymore, and I don't really want to braodcast
a show by a group of middle-aged men trying to recapture something
they did in their 20's..."
Me: "grrrrrrrrrrr....um, thanks, g'bye"
"Roger can't sing"?!
Nonetheless, I am now completeley in dire need to hear one of these shows--
it's unfair to be teased by the HBO thing and then not be able to partake in
the live broadcast! Aaarrrgh!
Perhaps we could start some sort of tape tree of the broadcast for the less
fortunate? I'd be happy to lend my deck in the name of Pete. 1.75 O19580
