Fang, the thing to keep in mind, and I feel pretty certain that you have, is
that much of the "rest of us" don't have your collection. It's as simple as
that. We bitch for what we want from MCA/whoever because we don't have what
you've got. You've got tons of live "the Who's greatest hits." Speaking for
myself and many others, we don't, and so would not be nearly as offended or
put off perhaps as you if the CD retrospective was done up in this fashion.
AT this stage, I would find it interesting at least and perhaps very
enjoyable to have another round of Who's greatest hits that don't overlap
what I've already got. I see your point, but your collection is probably not
representative of what the rest of us have.
I tend to agree that the CD retrospective will be reminiscent of the boxed
set in terms of approach: the usual favorites/a few rarities (I for one
found the boxed set to be lacking in rare stuff). I also agree that they
won't use inferior source material (the fact that the Fillmore East show has
been circulating for years through bootlegging when it could have been
officially released is testament to that theory).
