They were numbered so that Alan Rogan (Pete's guitar tech) could keep track
of them.  Since they carried as many as 12 (that's the highest number I
remember seeing, anyhow) Les Pauls which otherwise looked alike, Rogan needed
a quick way of identifying each.  Pete didn't number them, or care what
"number" guitar he was using; he selected the stage guitars by sound and
feel.  (Yes, even the exact same model can sound/feel differently from its
siblings--and even change from day to day [or hour to hour] depending on
temperature, weather [especially humidity], and other conditions.)
