>From Ian:
There are a few people who missed the point about what I said
concerning Linda Perry. One person was under the impression that I
believe all covers of Who songs to be bad while all Who covers are
great. That's certainly not true. It was me who just recently came
out and discussed "Who Covers Who" (a '94 release). I happen to like
3-4 of the songs on that CD. . . .

Me:
I never applied those ideas to Ian; they were merely generalizations about
notions re: covers which I've heard here and elsewhere. Before you tell me
what I believe, read what I wrote.

Ian:
If it's a good cover, I'll flat out say
it. No it doesn't have to sound like the original. And females
count too Ms. KATE!!!! Anyone who dismisses Patti Labelle's "Acid
Queen" is deaf. Now THAT is power! . . .

Me:
Gosh, using Ian's logic, I'd be led to believe Kate said she didn't like
Patti Labelle's Acid Queen, but since I've been reading these posts I know
better. Howcome I didn't get a name or a title when you discussed my post,
Master IAN???? Hmmm?

Ian:
Maybe I just upset the pro-punk people on this list about my
comments but I don't care. If a singer doesn't have the range to
sing a song like Dr. Jimmy (which was challenging for Roger in '73,
but he did it) they shouldn't bother. Perry TRIES to hit the notes
but doesn't make it. Sure she might've had the passion and emotion,
but she lacked the goods to get it done. . . .

Me:
OK, so she botched the word "stars." Roger never missed a note? Ever??
Please. Of everybody who was on stage during DST (apart from Eddie Vedder,
since I wasn't there to see/hear him), only Linda came close to Roger in the
range dept., and that was close indeed. In her case, the good's not gone,
but present and doing quite well, thank you.

Obviously, I don't expect to change your mind--these are aesthetic judgements,
I realize. However, coments on this list (NO, Ian, I'm not pointing at you!)
to the effect of "Linda Perry can't sing" come from the gut, not from the ear.
She CAN sing--fact; she is great/awful--opinion, tho I've not seen much of
substance in this dept.
