Re: TKAA performances

To Aaron, and all other interested parties:

I, too am a musician, and one of the pleasures in my life has been examining
the WHO's music for the subtleties in recording, the guitar sounds, the bass
runs, the drum fills, etc.. After years and years of doing this, one's
familiarity with the recordings breeds a certain level of expertise in the
ability to pick out the differences in recordings VS. video, sound dubbing
onto film, etc.. Feeling thusly qualified, I wish to give my 2 cents on the
WGFA performance from TKAA.

The "Who's Better, Who's Best" video version of WGFA/TKAA combines the TKAA
film footage and the TKAA soundtrack album version. Pure and simple. Nothing
was audiotracked by Pete, as the musical director of TKAA was, of course,
John Entwistle. To my knowledge, Pete had nothing to do with any
post-production on the audio portion of TKAA.

On top of that, for the TKAA soundtrack album, it's blatantly obvious that
John spliced in a portion of the song from a different performance. That
portion is from the 2nd synthesizer break (the one before the drum solo &
scream) to a split second before the last five "A" chords that signify the
song's traditional ending. This explains why there's no "same as the old
boss...y'gotcha" (or whatever it is) on the TKAA soundtrack album. That
spliced-in section is most definitely from either an earlier take of WGFA at
Shepperton on the same day (5/25/78) as the TKAA version, or from Kilburn
Theatre (12/15/77). I do remember reading that at the Shepperton show, WGFA
was played at least twice, as the first performance was overall not good. The
Baba O'Riley performance was a one-take deal, though.

As far as the acoustic guitar on WGFA's backing tracks, that dates back to the
original PT WGFA demo, which most recently can be found on the "Lifehouse
Demos" CD put out 4 years ago by Howdy Records, a bogus bootleg CD label. I
don't know about the rest of you, but I've ALWAYS heard that acoustic track on
WGFA. There once was an acoustic, LISTEN!! :) :)

Have a great day, all!!!!
