Re: Original Master/Cd's/New upgrades...

Pete:

The Tommy Original Master Recording is different (thus collectible) due to the
fact that "Eyesight to the Blind" has a totally different Daltrey lead vocal.
It sounds like they either used a lower register harmony vocal as the lead, or
just a different vocal take. The graphics of the CD booklet are on
high-quality glossy paper, and the CD sound is louder and warmer. The Who Are
You Original Master CD is valuable for the new (circa 1992) liner notes by
Townshend, the "Guitar And Pen" remix (with slightly slower speed) and the
longer fade on "Trick of the Light". If you listen closely to the end of
'Trick", Townshend starts kicking in with a very interesting, string-bending
solo. Very tasty.

The Quadrophenia OMR is beautifully packaged and has a cool cardboard
slipcase, like the more recently-introduced MCA packaging. I find that the
Quad OMR Gold CDs sound fuller, brighter, and the drums are clearer and pound
harder. Imagine what a full remix via MCA will sound like!!!!!! The OMR
package includes a shrunken-down version of the original Quad libretto on
slick paper stock.

Overall the WHO OMR releases sound a lot better than the standard MCA
releases. Listeners can hear more acoustic guitar throughout all these CDs.
Pete's acoustic, while used as a basis for many (if not most) WHO tracks has
in the past sounded pushed back on MCA's stock releases, almost inaudible at
times. Judging from the work on the Boxed Set of 1994, the new rereleases
will have better sonic clarity.
