Re: TheWho Digest Vol 2 Num 218

While everyone eagerly awaits the remastered version of "Who's Next" on CD, I
thought I would pass along this Press Release from MCA about the release of
"Who's Next" on a limited-edition state-of-the-art VINYL LP : "MCA Records is
proud to announce the debut of a milestone in high-tech audio entertainment:
Heavy Vinyl, a limited-edition series of state-of-the-art vinyl LPs,
remastered from original analog master tapes, pressed on thick, 180-gram
virgin vinyl and featuring original artwork and sleeves. MCA's Heavy Vinyl
series (first five releases -- The Who's "Who's Next", Buddy Holly's "Buddy
Holly", Dave Mason's "Alone Together", Buddy Guy's "I Was Walking Through The
Woods" and John Barry's soundtrack to "Out Of Africa") was conceived by Al
Teller, Chairman & CEO, MCA Music Entertainment Group. 'There is a new
generation of listeners rediscovering vinyl as well as a cross-section of
audiophiles and collectors who continue to appreciate both analog sound and
classic album cover art,' said Teller. 'This new series represents the
highest quality sound taken directly from original analog master tapes. MCA
has also chosen specific music with sonic qualities that are well-presented
in this media.' Each Heavy Vinyl disc was mastered by the team of Any McKaie,
Vice President, Catalog Development & Special Products, MCA Records, and
Kevin Gray, of Future Disc Systems in Hollywood, one of the world's premiere
mastering studios. The discs are remastered directly from original analog
master tapes without noise suppression or bass roll-off. They are then
manufactured using the latest innovations in cutting-lathe technology and
lacquer and vinyl formulations, and are designed to take full advantage of
recent advances in high-tech audiophile turntables and cartridges. As a
result, they are fully competitive with CDs, with a smoothness, spaciousness
and ultra-high resolution that is unsurpassed by any format. Michael Fremer,
Editor of 'The Tracking Angel' and an expert on high-tech vinyl issues,
agrees, rating as 'superb' the quality of the Heavy Vinyl series. In
conjunction with the release of the first five Heavy Vinyl LPs, MCA Records
will institute a special promotion with Technics and Panasonic turntables.
MCA will insert Heavy Vinyl catalogs in 100,000 turntable boxes in the United
States. The catalogs will include a special 800 number for the customer to
receive information about the series." The release date is October 10th...
