Daltrey Show at Concord (quick review)

Just thought I would post some quick comments about the
show this last Friday...

I didn't keep a set list (forgot my pen) but it appeared to be the
same as a list I saw posted here. Roger's on-stage talking with
the audience also seemed to be the same as others have mentioned;
comments about "Who Are You" and "too many synthesizers", about
being a "bloody huge Who fan", etc.

This is definitely a rock show and not some type of watered-down
orchestral version. The orchestra acts more as a filler for
certain effects, than as a background for the songs. The band
is very good. I was especially impressed with Zak Starkey and also
with the lead guitar player (sorry don't remember his name). Simon
adds some nice touches as well.

This show came after a 2 week break and recovery from some illness.
Unfortunately, I think they were a little less polished than they
might otherwise have been. They had some trouble staying in sync
with the orchestra, once John joined and the energy and volume levels
went up a notch. Roger's voice was good, but I noticed some parts
where we would choose to sing an easier note, or at least not "punch"
the high notes as much as we may remember. It's hard to know whether
this was a difference in this performance or the effect of being 50
years old. Generally, though, they gave a fine effort. The energy
was great, the crowd *really* got into; dancing for at least half of
the show and very little typical rock-and-roll bores yelling. Heck,
I could even hear a few people singing along to "Naked Eye"!

Don't take this as a negative review. I really enjoyed it and I think
all those "fans" who have written this off are making a mistake.
There are some great moments. John can still play like a monster, and
he blended well with the other instrments. Roger still can impart
great feeling and has sufficient power to hold up all those tunes.

I'm toying with the idea of going to Tahoe for the gig(s) on the 21/22
of this month. The rest of you enjoy it when it comes your way!

Paul

P.S. I was cool to watch the S.F. symphony members taping their
feet and getting into the jams.
